It discussed new projects and the cul-de-sac plan at its regular April 15 meeting.
About 10 members and about seven College and Cultural Center Neighborhood Association members and Court Street Village Non-Profit Housing Corporation employees cleaned up Central Park April 18.
Two properties and parkway flower beds were cleaned. Most of the effort was put into cleaning the exterior of a vacant property on Court Street.
"It is pretty obvious that this is a vacant house. Boarded-up houses attract people who cause neighborhood problems," said Edwin Custer, president.
The group removed debris, mowed the grass, painted the boarded-up windows and repaired some roof gutters. Annette Duso said the group did a similar cleanup last year on another Court Street property.
The group also mulched and cleaned up the parkway flower beds and the Court Street Village Neighborhood House, 727 East St.
The group discussed cleanups, the cul-de-sac plan, a children's playground and alleged criminal activities at a neighborhood house at the April 15 meeting.
Nancy Covucci said that during the next neighborhood cleanup the group should concentrate on cleaning up the parkways. The group agreed to hold a clean-up at 10 a.m. May 30. Volunteers will meet at the Court Street Village Neighborhood House.
Wally Schlanzky said the cul-de-sac plan did not appear on the Flint City Council April 13 agenda.
"According to Councilman Jack Minore (7th Ward), the earliest it will be on the agenda is June 8," she said.
Custer said the delay will probably not keep the cul-de-sacs from being built this year, if the plan is approved.
Mark Bohlen, representing Riverside Tabernacle Church, said children need a safe place to play in the neighborhood.
He proposed building a playground on part of the Riverside Tabernacle Church parking lot.
"This would be a joint effort between Riverside Tabernacle, your group, Court Street Village Non-Profit Housing Corporation and St. Luke's Missionary Baptist Church," Bohlen said.
"We will get funding through a local foundation. The Harding Foundation is moving into the neighborhood and might want to be part of the project," he added.
Bohlen said the average cost of a wooden play area is about $80,000.
Riverside Tabernacle Church will be responsible for insuring the play area and site security, he said.
The group agreed to form a sub-committee to help plan the project.
Covucci, crime watch chairman, said there are problems with residents at a house on Second Street next to the party store.
"There has been a lot of loud noise and people drinking in the front yard," she said.
Covucci said people should keep an eye on the house and call the police department if they see any criminal activities.
