Flint 68th District Judge Herman Marable Jr. and his Citizens Advisory Committee announced today that Rachel Neumann, 15, of Flint Township; Alexis Bonilla, 16, of Mt. Morris Township; Eveleen Clarke, 16, of Grand Blanc; Annalicia Hernandez, 15, of Flint Township; and Willie McClure Jr., 16, of Flint have been selected as Marable's students of the month for November, December, January and February.
The students were selected on the basis of their applications and essays.
Neumann attends Powers Catholic High School, Bonilla attends Johnson High School in Mt. Morris, Clarke attends the International Academy of Flint and Hernandez and McClure attend Genesee Early College on the campus of UM-Flint.
Neumann is looking forward to a career as a medical researcher and she has a strong interest in reading and sports. At school she is involved with student government, Chargers for Change, the ski and tennis teams and the school newspaper. She is active with the St. Gerard's Society and the St. Roberts Chapters for Children.
Bonilla aspires to have a career as a therapist or physiotherapist. Her interests include writing poetry.
Clarke would like to be a veterinarian. Her extra-curricular activities at school include serving as a lower school assistant, culinary arts and track. Her interests include cooking, playing video games, animals and children.
Hernandez would like to pursue a career as a cardiologist. She is a Great Lakes Scholar and participates in the National Honor Society at school. Her interests include Youth Leadership Genesee, karate, reading and volunteering.
McClure would like to become an obstetrician. At school he participates in student government, the National Honor Society, GEAR UP and UM-Flint's Saturday Morning Academy. He is a youth minister at Flint's House of Prayer Baptist Church where he is a Man-to-Man youth group member and president of the junior usher board. He enjoys playing the piano, reading, golfing, motivating others and is a member of the Youth Leadership Institute and Alpha Esquires.
As students of the month, each honoree will receive a $75 U.S. Savings Bond, trophy and certificate and will be invited to shadow Marable for a day at the court while he performs his official duties. The honorees names have been engraved on a plaque on permanent display at the 68th District Courthouse.
The Judge Marable Student of the Month and Year program was established in 2004 by Marable and his Citizens Advisory Committee to encourage Genesee County high school students to focus on academic achievement and career goals. Each month during the school year a 10th grade student is recognized based on the completion of an application and essay about their career goals. This summer one of the monthly awardees from the 2009-10 school year will be selected as Marable's student of the year and will receive a $500 savings bond.
