Genesys Wound Center offers healing therapies

The longer a wound takes to heal, the greater the risk of serious infection. The staff at Genesys Wound and Hyperbaric Center offer advanced clinical approaches that can improve healing rates and prevent possible limb loss.
According to Sharon Duso, director of the wound and hyperbaric center, the staff can treat most wounds — including burns, diabetic ulcers, pressure ulcers, abscesses, arterial ulcers and venous ulcers.
"Our outcomes are very good," Duso points out. "On an average, patients heal within four to six weeks. Many of these patients have had little quality of life, and have been suffering with chronic wounds for months — sometimes years."
The wound center staff works with a team of nine physicians representing infectious disease, vascular surgery, general surgery, podiatry and family practice.
"We provide every aspect of healing at our center," Duso says.
Every aspect also includes hyperbaric oxygen therapy, a medical treatment that enhances the body's natural healing ability and strengthens the body's immune system. Patients relax in a hyperbaric (pressurized) chamber while receiving therapy that consists of increasing the oxygen content level in their blood and compromised tissue in order to promote the growth of new blood vessels and skin. In normal atmosphere, people breathe about 20 percent oxygen and 80 percent nitrogen. During hyperbaric oxygen therapy, the pressure is increased two or three times more than normal and patients breathe 100 percent oxygen.
This combination of high concentrations of oxygen and increased pressure cause large amounts of oxygen to be dissolved in the blood and other tissue fluids.
This treatment is especially beneficial for non-healing wounds in diabetics, bone infections, radiation injury to bone or soft tissue burns, decompression illness, crush injuries (traumas) and carbon monoxide poisoning, to name a few.
