Ashley Hamilton selected student of year

Flint 68th District Judge Herman Marable Jr. and his citizens advisory committee announced today that Ashley Hamilton, 16, of Flint has been selected as the 2009-2010 Judge Marable Student of the Year. She is a junior at International Academy of Flint. Hamilton was previously selected as the student of the month for September 2009 on the basis of her application and essay about her career goals.
Ashley's ambition is to start an international nonprofit organization that would benefit the youth of the world.
As student of the year, Hamilton will receive a $500 savings bond, trophy and certificate. Hamilton's name will be engraved on a plaque on permanent display at the 68th District Courthouse.
The Judge Marable Student of the Month and Year Program was established in 2004 to encourage Genesee County high school students to focus on academic achievement and career goals. The program reached a milestone last school year in the naming of the 50th student of the month since its inception.
Each month during the school year, September to June, a 10th grade student is awarded a $75 savings bond, trophy and certificate based on the completion of an application and essay about their career goals. At the end of the school year, one of the monthly awardees is selected as student of the year.
Tenth grade students who are Genesee County residents or who attend public, charter, private high schools in Genesee County are eligible to apply for the award.
