Mott Foundation report on new media platforms

At a time when many foundations are giving up on print annual reports, the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation decided to breathe new life into the old medium by marrying its just-released report with a variety of new media platforms.
Nine nonprofit leaders — including Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu — contributed guest essays for the report, which showcases the work of Mott Foundation grantees working in the civil society sector of South Africa. Four of those essays were then digitally recorded and can be downloaded from the foundation's web site, as well as from the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation's channel in the iTunes Store.
To spark interest in the recordings and the annual report, the foundation also created a five-minute video that combines audio clips from the recordings with photographs of South Africa. The video can be viewed on the foundation's web site and on YouTube. The foundation also is using targeted e-mails, Facebook and Twitter to promote the book, audio and video.
The theme for the report, Blinded by Pessimism or Seeing Possibilities, emerged from a blogging project Mott undertook during the World Cup games in summer 2010. The blog, which remains posted on Mott's web site, provided a forum for 19 guest writers representing a variety of Mott-funded organizations to share reflections about their work, their challenges and their hopes for South Africa.
Similarly, the essayists for the print report struck a number of thought-provoking themes — such as the importance of cooperation, determination and tireless optimism, even in the most trying of times.
