Hurley Foundation gets $10,000 grant from Verizon

The Hurley Foundation has received a $10,000 grant from Verizon Wireless. The funds will go to the There's No Excuse for Abuse Campaign. It will enable Hurley Medical Center to focus on domestic violence awareness and prevention initiatives that will impact the daily lives of the numerous Medical Center patients, visitors, employees and staff and their families.

"Raising awareness through education is key to ending domestic violence," said John Granby, Verizon Wireless president of the Michigan, Indiana and Kentucky region. "We value the important work that the Hurley Foundation and Hurley Medical Center are doing in our community. This HopeLine grant reinforces our commitment to end domestic violence."

The $10,000 contribution was through the Verizon Wireless HopeLine Program which converts no-longer-used wireless phones into support for survivors of domestic violence. Since 2001, HopeLine has collected more than 8 million phones, awarded more than $10 million in cash grants to prevention and awareness programs nationwide and donated more than 106,000 HopeLine phones with 319 million minutes of airtime to victims, survivors and domestic violence organizations throughout the country.

"The grant will allow Hurley to raise awareness and provide help by mounting power and control wheel posters in each patient and public restroom and treatment room throughout the Hurley Medical Center campus — roughly 400 locations. Abuse comes in many forms. The more outreach and education we can do as a premier public teaching hospital, the better," says Adreena Harley, clinical nurse specialist in nursing education and professional development at Hurley Medical Center.

The power wheel poster demonstrates how power and control are at the center of abusive relationships. The spokes of the power wheel explain the many forms that this power and control can take, such as physical or sexual abuse, threats and intimidation, verbal and emotional abuse, controlling family finances and decisions, using the children and isolating victims from friends and support systems.

On each holder will be an area to insert business-sized abuse help cards which list local and national help lines and how to get help. Individuals may read the power wheel poster, take a help card and tuck it away discretely until they are ready to use the card to call for information or help.

By mounting the power wheel posters and abuse help cards in 400 public and patient restrooms, Hurley will have the opportunity to impact 75,000 patients, as well as their visitors and family members. An additional benefit of mounting the power wheel posters and help cards in all restrooms will be to simultaneously raise the awareness level of the 2,500 hospital employees, 350 volunteers, 116 residents and fellows and 512 physicians.

The grant will also allow Hurley Medical Center to send 12 nurses for training as sexual assault nurse examiners (SANE). By having SANE trained nurses available at Hurley, the quality of care extended to sexual assault victims who arrive at Hurley's Emergency Department and require care throughout the facility will be greatly enhanced. A team that is able to identify the dynamics of sexual assault, evaluate and clinically manage the patient appropriately will ensure comprehensive care, including follow up, counseling, support and advocacy services.

Last year in Michigan, Verizon Wireless and the Verizon Foundation donated nearly $200,000 in cash grants to local domestic violence agencies and shelters. Verizon Wireless and HopeLine also donated 3 million minutes of service to help domestic violence survivors in Michigan in 2010.

The Hurley Foundation, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, was incorporated in 1992. The organization raises funds and coordinates other resources, including volunteers, for Hurley Medical Center.

Hurley Medical Center is a 443-bed premier public teaching hospital located in the heart of Genesee County.
