Genesys Health System and Patricia Maryland, Ascension Health Michigan, announce that Elizabeth "Betsy" Aderholdt has been named president of Genesys Health System.
Aderholdt has been serving as interim co-CEO of Genesys Health System since February 2011 and as president of Genesys Regional Medical Center since 2007.
"Stepping into this new role represents the fulfillment of what I have been working toward my entire career. I am quite humbled and honored by this opportunity and so proud to be a part of Genesys because I know how dedicated this organization is to achieving excellence in quality patient care and fulfilling our mission to our community," said Aderholdt.
Karen Aldridge-Eason, Genesys Health System board of trustees chairperson, on behalf of herself and her fellow trustees, said: "For more than three years, we have seen firsthand the dynamic actions, results and successes achieved by Betsy. She is an exceptional leader who has been instrumental in sustaining Genesys during these challenging economic times. She has been a driving force for advancing our vision for the future and securing our position as a nationally recognized organization for clinical excellence, innovation and healthcare reform. Naming her as our system's new president and CEO was the best possible decision for us to stay this course and continue taking Genesys into the future."
"When it came time to naming a new president and CEO of Genesys, Betsy was clearly at the top of our list. In addition to being an existing, proven leader at Genesys, Betsy exemplifies the values, decision-making and team-building talents that are the hallmarks of the top leaders of Ascension Health ministries," says Maryland.
As president of Genesys Medical Center since July 2007, Aderholdt was responsible for the overall management and strategic direction of the 410-bed hospital in Grand Blanc, which under her leadership became one of "America's 50 Best Hospitals" as designated by HealthGrades. Aderholdt was also instrumental in leading the organization in its 2009 creation of co-management companies jointly owned by Genesys and physician investors. The model for these companies is already being recognized as a national leading practice for creating hospital and physician alignment to improve outcomes for quality, efficiency and patient satisfaction.
"These years at Genesys have been a phenomenal opportunity to make significant transformations in healthcare. Our high quality outcomes, along with the level of physician integration we have achieved, are key components in a coordinated care model that will set the pace for other hospitals in the country. I feel truly fortunate to step into this new leadership role for an organization that is already well-positioned at the forefront of health care reform and the advent of accountable care organizations," added Aderholdt.
Aderholdt's career in health care administration spans nearly 30 years. Prior to joining Genesys, Aderholdt served as president at St. Mary's Health Center in Jefferson City, Mo., for five years. St. Mary's Health Center is comprised of a 167-bed acute care hospital, 20 off-site clinics, an employer provider practice (primary physicians and specialists) and a 120-bed skilled nursing facility. She also served at Carilion Health System in Virginia, Piedmont Medical Center in Georgia and Sunhealth in Georgia.
Aderholdt, who lives in Grand Blanc, is involved in the Flint area arts community, including serving on the board of the Flint Cultural Center, and is an outdoor enthusiast who enjoys fishing, skiing and biking throughout Michigan. She is married to an automotive engineering consultant and has two grown children.
As mid-Michigan's leading health care provider and one of its top employers, Genesys Health System is committed to the medical, economic and spiritual vitality of the patients and communities it serves as an integrated health care delivery system with a complete continuum of care serving Flint and the Genesee County region. In addition to being continually ranked among the nation's best for clinical excellence, Genesys also provides more than $40 million a year in care to the poor, uncompensated care and community benefits. This commitment stems from Genesys' history as a Catholic organization serving the community for 90 years with a mission of care that spans centuries. At the heart of that mission are more than 5,000 employees, volunteers and physicians who are dedicated to the current and longterm success of Genesys and to the patients and community it serves.
Ascension Health (www.ascensionhealth.org) is transforming health care by providing the highest quality care to all, with special attention to those who are poor and vulnerable. Ascension Health, which provided $1.1 billion in care of persons who are poor and community benefit last year, is the nation's largest Catholic and nonprofit health system. Ascension's mission-focused Health Ministries employ 113,000 associates serving in more than 500 locations in 20 states and the District of Columbia.
