Woodside Church, 1509 E. Court St., welcomes the Rev. Kendall Harold Brown as its interim minister and pastor. Brown has developed a deep appreciation of the special blessings and unique challenges many urban churches face and he brings nearly 40 years of experience to Woodside, beginning as a co-pastor at a church in northern Vermont.
From Vermont, his calling took him to First Congregational Church, United Church of Christ, in Oxford, Mass. In addition to many accomplishments, he established a local food shelf which is now an ecumenical project serving 150 families each month.
Next, Brown was pastor of Grace United Church of Christ in St. Louis, Mo. There, he strengthened the Christian education program and, through faith based community organizing, opened a new door for urban ministry.
Most recently Brown has been serving as pastor of Christ Church in Evansville, Ind. Again, he demonstrated his commitment to the needs of urban communities by helping to nurture an English as second language program serving many families from Japan and Central America.
Brown has also been active in the Evansville Tri State Association of the UCC, serving as president since 2008. During the past few years, his interest in churches in transition intensified.
"Woodside has been in a period of transition since our senior pastor left last November," explained church moderator Carol Higgins. "We are happy to welcome the Rev. Brown with his interest in helping churches through transitions. And clearly he has demonstrated his understanding of and commitment to the role churches play in urban settings. We are sure the Rev. Brown is going to be a wonderful force within Woodside and for our community."
Members of his previous churches describe his style as thoughtful with the ability to convey how biblical teachings apply to daily living. He is said to use interesting, even entertaining ways to make a point and takes particular care in his messages during moments with the children in the church.
Brown also brings a love of music. He plays piano and organ and has sung in choirs.
"The Rev. Brown also enjoys the arts, gardening and dining out with his wife. These are all activities he can enjoy in Flint and the surrounding area," said Jeanne Pepper, who is a member of Woodside and led the search committee. "While we are looking forward to what the Rev. Brown can bring to Woodside, we are also very excited to introduce him and his wife, Cheryl, to our city."
Brown and Cheryl, will relocate to Flint from Evansville, Ind. He will lead his first service at Woodside at 10 a.m. May 22.
