Hurley doctor, nurse get citation

Dr. Samuel R. Dismond Jr., Hurley family physician, and his wife, Janice A. Dismond, a registered nurse, were presented a Presidential Citation during the 146th annual meeting of the Michigan State Medical Society House of Delegates April 30 in Kalamazoo.
"We feel so honored to be recognized by MSMS and to receive such a prestigious award. Mrs. Dismond and I love medicine and are committed to giving our patients the most comprehensive and outstanding clinical care possible at Hurley Medical Center, day in and day out. We love what we do, and try to make a difference each day in the lives of our patients that we care so deeply about," said Dismond.
The award was presented to the Dismonds by Dr. Daniel B. Michael, outgoing MSMS president, for their distinguished service to the practice of medicine by providing medical care to patients in dire need for more than five decades.
Dismond has been a physician at Hurley Medical Center for more than 40 years. He is a past president of the Genesee County Medical Society and a past president of the African-American Physicians Association of Genesee County. He has been named Family Physician of the Year by his state and national associations.
"A list of Dismond's local, state and national honors would fill pages," Michael said in presenting the award. "However, he is the first to point out that anything he has accomplished has been with Janice at his side, caring for patients and managing the practice."
"Families the Dismonds first saw in practice are now second generation and third generation patients," Michael said. "The health care system in the Flint area, in general, and Hurley Medical Center, in particular, would not be the same today without their continued efforts to ensure primary care for underserved patients.
"For more than 50 years, every day has been "Make a Difference Day" for the Dismonds," Michael said. "All of their lives they have worked to make things better. They are succeeding — one life at a time."
"For all they have endured, for all they have accomplished, for all of the health care they have provided and for all of the hope they have instilled, I am proud to present this Michigan State Medical Society Presidential Citation to Dr. Samuel R. Dismond Jr. and Janice A. Dismond, RN," Michael said.
The Michigan State Medical Society is the statewide professional association of 16,000 medical doctors in Michigan affiliated with the American Medical Association. Physician policies on various issues involving public health, health care delivery and medical ethics are set at the annual MSMS House of Delegates meeting.
Hurley Medical Center is a 443-bed premier public teaching hospital in the heart of Genesee County. As the region's only level one trauma center, burn center and the highest level neonatal intensive care unit available in Genesee County, Hurley is a recognized leader in clinical care and education. It has affiliations with Michigan State University, the UM-Ann Arbor, the UM-Flint, Mott Community College and Henry Ford Health System. Hurley, founded in 1908, provides patient care for more than 100,000 people annually.
