Mott Foundation hires program associate

DeJuan J. Woods of Wixom, Mich., has joined the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation as an associate program officer for the Pathways Out of Poverty grantmaking team. He is responsible for Mott's "microenterprise" portfolio, which supports organizations that encourage small business development among low-income Americans, and other poverty-related grantmaking at the foundation.
Most recently, Woods worked for Michigan State University in Lansing, where he was an associate director of development for the College of Engineering, a job he held from August 2009 until starting at Mott. From 2005 to 2009, Woods worked in development at the University of Michigan, first on the Flint campus and then for the university's Comprehensive Cancer Center in Ann Arbor.
His prior experiences also include positions in the banking industry and the South African Student Exchange Program based in Southfield, Mich. He holds a bachelor's degree in general studies from UM-Ann Arbor campus and is a master's of business administration candidate at the school.
"Wood's skills and experience with nonprofits and in fund development make him an excellent addition to Mott's grantmaking team," said Maureen H. Smyth, the foundation's senior vice president of programs and communications. "He will be a tremendous asset in helping to guide and shape the foundation's support for initiatives that lift families out of poverty."
Mott has invested more than $53 million in microenterprise activities since 1984, supporting efforts to help low- and moderate-income households launch new businesses, and to strengthen the field via the development, replication and formal evaluation of effective models.
The Mott Foundation, established in 1926 by an automotive pioneer, is a private philanthropy committed to supporting projects that promote a just, equitable and sustainable society. It supports nonprofit programs throughout the U.S. and, on a limited geographic basis, internationally. Grants are focused in four programs — civil society, environment, Flint area and pathways out of poverty. Besides Flint, offices are in metropolitan Detroit, Johannesburg, South Africa, and London.
