Merkley-Youth Charitable Trust gives museum $5,000

The Flint Children's Museum, 1602 W. University Ave., will open its doors for free to about 500 local children who otherwise may not have had the opportunity to visit the museum this year thanks to money from the Merkley-Youth Charitable Trust.
The museum will seek families with special circumstances that make it difficult for them to visit the museum. They will visit local women's shelters, churches that serve the underprivileged and homes of disabled children or adults to encourage them to visit the museum for free.
According to Susan Schneberger, transition executive director, "The Flint Children's Museum is 'Disney World' to many of our local children. We are here for them, and we can't thank the Merkley-Youth Charitable Trust enough. It is donations like this that make it all possible."
The $5,000 came in two grants from the Merkley-Youth Charitable Trust. One will fund the special day for local families and a second grant will support a month-long partnership between the trust and the Flint Children's Museum.
The museum offers more than 40 hands-on exhibits for children to learn, play with and explore. It is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesdays through Fridays and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturdays.
