Team helps relatives of people with serious health problems

Hearing that a loved one has been diagnosed with a serious, possibly life-limiting illness can be overwhelming. Emotions seem to run wild — fear, anger, sadness, guilt, anxiety. And then, what do you do?
Studies show that when given bad news about an illness, patients and families don't remember a lot they are told beyond the diagnosis. It may be difficult to think clearly and make the best decisions for your loved one.
That is when the Genesys palliative care team steps in. Patients and families need to rely on someone to walk them through what is happening, discuss in detail the choices they have and how to coordinate care in the best way over the course of the illness.
At Genesys, the palliative care medical team works with patients and family members to provide support, offer closely monitored expert treatment for pain and other symptoms and discuss treatment choices that make the most sense for the patient. Focus is on providing care by alleviating pain or other symptoms — from physical to psychological, social and spiritual.
The Genesys Palliative Care Program, directed by Dr. Stuart Weiner, coordinates inpatient and outpatient services. The interdisciplinary team that works with patients and family members includes the patient's primary care physician, palliative care nurses, pharmacists, spiritual care chaplains, social workers, behavioral health specialists, a dietitian and a hospice liaison.
"Our inpatient program allows patients to stay in the hospital if they are close to death," explains Weiner. "Instead of spending those precious final days or hours moving the patient to another facility, the family can choose to keep their loved one here with us. This allows them more quality time together.
"At Genesys, we offer choices for patients so they can live the rest of their life with as much peace, comfort and dignity as possible. This time should be of the highest quality possible," Weiner adds.
