Foundation awards grant to Sloan Museum

The Collectors Foundation of Traverse City has awarded Sloan Museum a $10,000 grant to continue its successful auto restoration internship program. This funding will help to educate young people and adults about vintage automobiles and their care and restoration while training student interns to become professional restorers. Restoration activities will take place in Sloan's Buick Automotive Gallery in a vehicle restoration facility that allows the public to view the work in progress.
This year's grant will provide paid and non-paid internships for as many as 15 students from Mott Community College, Flint's GASC Technology Center and Kansas-based McPherson College. The internships will begin this summer and run through the 2011-2012 school year. Students will work on a classic 1953 Buick Skylark and other vintage vehicles in Sloan's collection.
"We very much appreciate the generosity of the Collectors Foundation," said Tim Shickles, director of Sloan Museum and Longway Planetarium. "With the foundation's strong continuing support, we are undertaking important vehicle restoration work, training future practitioners in this exciting field and introducing many museum visitors to vintage vehicles and how they are restored and maintained."
Sloan Museum, 1221 E. Kearsley St., is on the Flint Cultural Center campus with the nearby Buick Automotive Gallery at 303 Walnut St. Museum hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays through Fridays and noon to 5 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays. Museum admission, which includes admission to the Buick Gallery, is $6 for adults, $5 for seniors and $4 for children 3 to 11. Since 2004, Sloan Museum and Longway Planetarium have operated under a single management structure, and have a mission to create engaging experiences for everyone that inspire lifelong curiosity in history, science and technology.
The Collectors Foundation is a public 501(c)(3) charitable organization governed by an independent board of directors designed to serve the long-term interests and passion of collector vehicle and classic boat hobbyists. The foundation is an independent resource supported by enthusiasts who care about passing on the tools and respect for craftsmanship to the next generation, appreciate the historic development of transportation in its different modes and want to encourage young people to get involved.
