Foreclosure prevention assistance available

The number of Genesee County homes going into foreclosure is at record numbers. This month saw one in every 441 housing units in the county receive a foreclosure filing. The national average is one in every 611 units.
While the number of foreclosures remains high, the help for homeowners remains extremely low. The number of people struggling to make their mortgage payment with nowhere to turn and who don't understand the foreclosure process create the perfect opportunity for people to take advantage of those in need. The number of scams has increased to dangerously high numbers. Homeowners are paying for assistance to people that guarantee they will save their homes but have no intention of doing anything with the homeowner after payment is made.
Metro Community Development is a valuable option for homeowners. It helps struggling homeowners during this process by offering free foreclosure prevention assistance to Genesee County residents. Individuals in need are encouraged to contact the agency to set up a time to meet with a housing counselor. There are options available for most homeowners other than foreclosure that the counselor helps the homeowner identify and pursue.
Metro Community Development also offers free foreclosure prevention workshops biweekly to provide the public the opportunity to understand the foreclosure process and the rights of homeowners going through a foreclosure. Contact the office for a list of times and dates.
Limited mortgage financial assistance is also available for qualified homeowners who are delinquent on their mortgage. Funding is limited and will be distributed to the first eligible candidates that apply. Contact the agency for details.
Struggling homeowners are encouraged to take action immediately. The early stages of delinquency are the most critical. Homeowners who are one or two payments behind are more likely to keep their homes than those who have fallen further behind on their mortgage payments.
