Mott Foundation promotes Roberson, Johnson

The Charles Stewart Mott Foundation Oct. 10 announced the promotion of two staff members. Kimberly S. Roberson, a longtime program officer, has been named program director of the Flint Area grantmaking team. Roberson succeeds Neal R. Hegarty who recently was named associate vice president of programs. Megan Russell Johnson, a program assistant, has been promoted to associate program officer for the Pathways Out of Poverty team.
"The promotions of these experienced staff members not only will ensure continuity of grantmaking in two key areas of foundation grantmaking — Flint and after school — but also will bring an important depth of understanding to the areas in which they work," said William S. White, foundation president and CEO.
Roberson, who joined the foundation staff in 1997 as a consultant for the Flint Area program, became an associate program officer the following year. In 2002, she began splitting her time with the Foundation's Civil Society Program, managing the U.S. race relations grant portfolio while continuing to work on projects addressing race relations in Flint and Genesee County. She was promoted to program officer in 2003.
More recently, in addition to her Flint-area gantmaking duties, Roberson has been responsible for grantmaking to encourage diversity in philanthropy in the U.S. nonprofit sector program area.
Before joining the foundation, Roberson served from 1989 to 1994 as assistant to the county commander for the Salvation Army in Flint. She also worked for the Salvation Army in Albany, N.Y., and the United Kingdom.
After graduating with a bachelor's degree in sociology from Oberlin (Ohio) College, Roberson earned a master's in art and religion from Yale University and two master's degrees in social work and public administration from the UM-Ann Arbor. She received her doctoral degree from the University of Michigan's School of Social Work in 1999.
Russell Johnson, who began working for the foundation in 2010 in the Learning Beyond the Classroom portfolio, will assume increased responsibilities for Mott's national network of after school grantees, as well as its after school technical assistance collaborative.
Before joining the foundation staff in 2010, Johnson managed youth programs at HandsOn Battle Creek and worked as an adjunct faculty member at Kellogg Community College.
Johnson graduated with a bachelor's degree in English from Albion College and earned her master's degree in public administration from Western Michigan University.
The C.S. Mott Foundation, established in 1926 by an automotive pioneer, is a private philanthropy committed to supporting projects that promote a just, equitable and sustainable society. It supports nonprofit programs throughout the U.S. and, on a limited geographic basis, internationally. Grantmaking is focused in four programs — Civil Society, Environment, Flint Area and Pathways Out of Poverty.
