Hurley doctors read X-rays — on treadmill

Physicians in Hurley's radiology department have a new addition — a two-week-old treadmill. Doctors at Hurley Medical Center are reading X-rays and changing lives, while they work out.
"This is a win-win situation," says Dr. AppaRao Mukkamala, chief of radiology at Hurley Medical Center. "This is not only burning calories, but it increases work productivity because of the blood flow to your brain. Doctors are finding 10 percent more findings while reading films this way. Because of this new technology, we are able to reduce stress, improve mood, reduce back problems, improve sleep and reverse and delay aging," adds Mukkamala.
The revolutionary concept was first created in 1996 by a psychology professor at the University of California-Berkeley. But the idea began to catch on only after a Mayo Clinic endocrinologist, Dr. James Levine, devised and tested a treadmill desk in 2005 and calculated that walking while you work at a slow, steady pace (less than two miles per hour) can burn 100 to 130 calories per hour, three pounds a month and a yearly loss of close to 40 pounds.
Hurley Medical Center is a 443-bed premier public teaching hospital in the heart of Genesee County. As the region's only level one trauma center, burn center and the highest-level neonatal intensive care unit available in Genesee County, Hurley is a recognized leader in clinical care and education. It has affiliations with Michigan State University, the UM-Ann Arbor, the UM-Flint, Mott Community College and Henry Ford Health System. Hurley, founded in 1908, provides patient care for more than 100,000 people annually.
