Hurley gets $10,000 grant for substance use project

The Community Foundation of Greater Flint has authorized a $10,000 grant from the Clayton K. Stroup Endowment Fund to assist in funding the Hurley Medical Center Substance Use and Addiction Disorders Project, that provides specialized treatment services for patients with substance use and addiction disorders and complications.
"Through this groundbreaking and vital project, a physician with training and demonstrated competency in substance use disorders, withdrawal management and treatment protocols will be used as a consultant to patients at the Hurley Medical Center medical units. In particular, these patients will include those in the psychiatric where the incidents of co-occurring psychiatric and substance use disorders are disproportionately higher than in other patient populations," says Mike Burnett, Hurley administrator for clinical programs.
The Substance Use and Addiction Disorders Project will serve those patients who are uninsured or underinsured and have no other resources with which to obtain such services. Without this assistance, individuals with addiction disorders would not have the opportunity to alter their lifestyle of self-destructive substance abuse behavior.
The $10,000 grant from the Community Foundation of Greater Flint will be used to provide physicians with the ability to consult this "addiction medicine" service in order to effectively diagnose and treat complications related to substance abuse with the goals of:
- Appropriately connecting patients to needed community resources and treatment providers after discharge.
- Providing education to care providers on the diagnosis of addiction disorders and treatment.
- Providing feedback and data to the hospital's quality improvement programs with regard to addiction and withdrawal issues.
- Assisting in the development or provision of graduate medical education lectures related to the diagnosis of addiction and withdrawal issues.
Hurley Medical Center is a 443-bed premier public teaching hospital in the heart of Genesee County. As the region's only level one trauma center, burn center and the highest-level neonatal intensive care unit available in Genesee County, Hurley is a recognized leader in clinical care and education. It has affiliations with Michigan State University, the UM-Ann Arbor, the UM-Flint, Mott Community College and Henry Ford Health System. Hurley, founded in 1908, provides patient care for more than 100,000 people annually.
