Flint hires chief planner to lead master planning process

Flint Emergency Manager Michael Brown announced Feb. 14 the hiring of Megan Hunter as the city's new chief planner to lead the comprehensive master planning process. Hunter, a Michigan native, currently works as the Harbor Region city planner for Los Angeles.
The city signed a two-year contract with Hunter beginning March 5.
She will receive an annual salary of $89,600, which will be 100 percent paid from the Community Challenge Planning Grant awarded to the city from the U.S. Housing and Urban Development Department.
As chief planner, Hunter's responsibilities will include guiding the city's master planning process and establishing and managing a planning division in the city's community and economic development department. Additionally, she will serve as a resource to all community and economic planning activities including the Flint Planning Commission, Zoning Board of Appeals, Economic Development Corporation and the Historic District Commission.
The Department of Housing and Urban Development sustainable housing and communities office awarded the city of Flint a $1.5 million Community Challenge Planning Grant to develop a comprehensive master plan Oct. 20, 2010.
The grant is allowing the city to develop its first master plan in more than 30 years.
Mayor Dayne Walling says the plan will provide a framework for achieving long-term sustainability. "The master plan is the long-range vision for how we want to see our community grow. It will outline strategies for stabilizing property values, enhancing economic development and guiding decisions about capital improvements and infrastructure," said Walling. "We are long overdue for a master plan in Flint."
