Flint teacher wins award for writing grant for 'Culture Surfing'

The Flint Classroom Support Fund will give its first Thomas Landaal Great Idea Award at 9 a.m. March 5 to Gina Morris-Cicalo, a teacher at Southwestern Academy and Classical Academy. The award carries a $1,500 prize.
Morris-Cicalo wrote the winning grant, titled Culture Surfing. It's also the title of student film project.
She intends to buy a 13-inch MacBook Pro for her classroom for future film projects.
Culture Surfing uses the production process and digital recording to promote cultural pluralism, creative teaching methodology and child-centered learning. The school's first film project completed in the 2009-2010 school year was very successful. The number of students participating has doubled and the number of instructors has gone from two to almost 20. This project has created connections with four other schools and two community organizations.
The Flint Classroom Support has established a special award in honor of a longtime fund president who died in 2007. Thomas Landaal, a former president of the Flint Classroom Support Fund, was very active in the community and devoted numerous hours to make things better in Flint.
