"It's all about helping others," said Marcia Heller, volunteer coordinator for the Salvation Army.
She and Connie Peters, director of development for the organization, spoke at the East Side Business Association meeting Nov. 2 about how volunteers made a difference in the community last year and offered new opportunities for the coming holiday season.
According to Peters, during fiscal year 2009-2010, the agency helped 635 county households with eviction prevention services and 1,618 households with utility shutoff prevention assistance and 47 individuals received bus passes, vouchers for clothing and furniture and referrals for eye care.
Besides routine services, the agency used local volunteers to help provide more than 1,400 families with help during the holiday season, including food boxes, toys, stocking stuffers, clothing and coats.
Bell ringers at the red kettles collected $762,000 last year — money that was used to help the needy in the community.
According to Peters, the agency continues to focus its energy in the heart of cities where the need is greatest.
"The Salvation Army has been serving Genesee County families since 1893," Peters added.
"One of our services, emergency disaster, serves firefighters, EMT's, police and others responding to critical situations. The Red Cross serves those stricken by disaster, but we serve those responding to disaster, Peters explained.
"Last year move than 3,365 people fighting fires and other kinds of disasters received our help," Peters said.
"The 2011 Coats for Kids program is about to begin," Peters continued. "With abc12, and WIOG 102.5, 1,700 Genesee County kids got a new or gently used coat with a value of over $24,000 last year," Peters said "Brenda's Absolutely the Best Dry Cleaners, 3607 Beecher Rd., washes, cleans and mends all the donated used coats at no cost," Peters added.
Volunteer coordinator Marsha Heller said volunteers for their programs come from all over the county.
"Last year we helped a woman with our Christmas assistance program. This year the woman returned, not for more assistance, but to volunteer. She had found a job working second shift but wanted to volunteer first shift with us," Heller explained.
Volunteers are needed to ring bells at the kettles, be an angle tree assistant, collect toys or coats for kids, become an assistance counselor, perform data entry or help with food distribution.
Call Heller at (810) 232-2196 to volunteer. All volunteers are required to have a background check.
