East Side group hears from candidate, health care firm official

Attorney Glenn Cotton told East Side Business Association March 21 that he's a candidate for the 68th District Court. Admission Director Judi Cottrell, HCR Manor Care, spoke to the group about services and employment opportunities offered by her firm.
Cotton said two incumbents and two other candidates are vying for the two open positions on the court. If a fifth candidate qualifies, a primary will be held before the November election.
"The court system must be fair," Cotton said. "We must stop complaining and become part of the solution — making Flint a better place."
Cotton was asked about Public Act 4 that gave the state-appointed emergency financial manager control over local government until a judge recently ruled the process violated the Open Meetings Act.
Cotton said he agreed with the judge and hopes that elected officials can resolve Flint's financial issues without disenfranchising the community.
Cotton is a 1985 graduate of Carman High School. He received his bachelor's of arts from UM-Ann Arbor in 1989 and his jurist doctorate from the University of Detroit Mercy School of Law in 1994. He has been practicing law for more than 14 years.
Besides his work Cotton says he's dedicated to the Great Lakes Baptist District Association and is a member of its constitution and bylaws committee. He is a board member of the North Flint Reinvestment Corporation. He is also on the board of Big Brothers Big Sisters.
Cottrell said HCR Manor Care, whose firm owns the Briarwood Manor facility on the East Side, employs more than 200 people in a wide variety of positions including maintenance and kitchen help. She said that facility has very low employee turnover.
The facility accepts only short-term care patients and more than 95 percent of them receive rehabilitation therapy services.
"Over 90 percent of our patients are able to manage their care when they are discharged," Cottrell said. "Our rehabilitation patients stay less than 30 days on average before returning home."
Cottrell distributed a list of extended care facilities in the area and asked what criteria members would use to determine which one of the facilities to choose for their family members.
Most members said that location — being close to home —was an important factor.
Cottrell urged members to consider other factors when choosing a facility, like quality of health care, social activities available and personal referrals.
"We offer an internet cafe which is very popular with patients," Cottrell added.
The facility has meeting rooms available for churches and clubs.
Raynetta Speed, Genesee County Land Bank, announced a meeting for nonprofits and block clubs on accessing resources from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. March 27 at Vernon Chapel AME Church, 5802 Dupont St.
David Caswell announced a coalition meeting about scrap metal theft at 6 p.m. March 26 at the First Union Baptist Church, 609 E. Jamieson St.
