Opinion: Reflections on agenda for May 11 Planning Commission meeting

The Flint Planning Commission will meet at 6 p.m. May 11 on the third floor of City Hall. The agenda has two public hearings.
The first public hearing is a rezoning request for four lots on Glenn Avenue, just north of Flint Park Boulevard and east of Flint Park Lake. The lots are zoned A-2 (single-family, medium-density) residential district. The proposed change is to D-2 (neighborhood business) district. If approved, the applicant proposes to use the four lots as staff parking for Moon Funeral Home, 906 W. Flint Parkway.
The second public hearing is a request from Churchill's, 440 Saginaw St., to provide outdoor seating.
(I have some questions about whether the design of the seating area allows for enough space for sidewalk users since the drawing makes it look like the barrier comes awfully close to the sidewalk tree.)
The rest is our standing items including an update on the CEDS plan (Comprehensive Economic Development Strategy) and master planning initiative.
There is time for public comment at the start of the meeting and a time at each of the public hearings to speak on those specific topics.
The meeting is open to the public.
